5 Fun & Easy St. Patrick’s Day Activities
St. Patrick’s Day may not be the most important or even the biggest holiday but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. These St. Patrick’s Day activities are perfect for a simple way to celebrate.
Read “How To Catch A Leprechaun”
You know me and my love of books! There’s truly a book for everything! My favorite St. Patty’s Day book to read is “How To Catch A Leprechaun!” Really, the whole series by Adam Wallace is fantastic, but I love that in this one, the leprechaun challenges kids at the end to try to build a trap that will finally catch him from his antics!! It’s such a fun read-aloud!
Have students design a Leprechaun trap
After reading the book, challenge students to design their own leprechaun trap! If you use my Hands-On Challenge kits, you can even let students use their play dough and Legos to try to build a trap. Or hand out some supplies to each student–even those connecting cubes that we usually have billions of in our classroom will work great!
If you’re short on time or supplies, you can also have students skip the actual building and go straight to drawing their trap and labeling it on my “How To Catch A Leprechaun” paper included in my March Class Books resource! (You can save big and get the yearlong Class Books bundle HERE, including digital versions of each prompt!)
Have students write about their traps
Once students have designed their leprechaun traps, have them write about their trap and how they’d catch the leprechaun! If you use the “How To Catch A Leprechaun” writing paper (found HERE), you can turn all of their writing into a class book with the matching class book cover included in the resource!
I loved adding the class book to our library for students to enjoy! It made them feel like real authors, and it is so fun to have your very own “How To Catch A Leprechaun” book to add to your classroom library now!
Give each student an “I’m so lucky to be your teacher!” note!
It’s so important to celebrate our students! Building positive relationships with them is something we should focus on all year long, and holidays are a fun way to build on this practice!
You can leave this: “I’m so lucky to be your teacher! note on each of your students’ desks on St. Patrick’s Day! Or you can send them the digital version of the note!
Either way, your students will love getting this note from you!! This is just one of the 72 notes you can get in my Positive Notes For Students Resource!
Have the leprechaun leave each student a surprise!
One of the best parts of teaching the primary grades is the magic and wonder they bring to life! It is such a fun age to teach!! After your students have designed and written about their leprechaun traps, have the leprechaun leave them a surprise on their desk the next day with a note on the board that says something like:
“Dear Leprechaun Trap Makers, I saw your trap designs, and they were very impressive!! Even though you didn’t catch me this year, I wanted to leave you a lucky little treat on your desk! Keep up the great work, and keep reading lots of great books! Love, Mr. Leprechaun”
You could leave anything for a treat, but I loved book-themed gifts whenever possible, so you could print off and give each student either the “Books are better than gold!” or “You are always lucky when you find a good book!” bookmark found in my yearlong Book Gift Tags & Bookmarks resource!
YAY! You’re now all set for St. Patrick’s Day!
I was always looking for ways to add more fun to our learning! Adding more fun into our school days is a great way to create a joy-filled classroom and keep your students engaged in learning!!
