Are you gearing up for lesson planning in the month of December? It is a fun, yet chaotic month to teach in. When I was in the classroom, I always loved tying in some fun themed activities to keep students engaged in learning. So, in this blog post, I’m sharing some fun and easy reindeer lesson plans for you to use with your students!
Why Use Reindeer Lesson Plans?
I’m not sure if it’s because they pull Santa’s sleigh or they are just intriguing creatures on their own but kids seem to LOVE learning about reindeer! This makes lesson planning during the holidays so much more fun! When learning about reindeer, you can easily tie it into every subject. Let’s look at some fun ideas below for your reindeer lesson plans!
Books To Read to Students about Reindeers in December
I always began a new unit by building background knowledge with my students and that’s how I recommend you begin your reindeer unit too. Check out the list of books below that are great read alouds for the month of December about reindeer. {The books are all affiliate links}

December Class Books
After reading about reindeers make a Reindeer Class book together to put into your classroom library! Using December Class Books is an excellent way to get students writing about reindeer. There is a prompt to write all about what students have learned about reindeer. This is a fun follow-up activity to use after reading some of the books above and giving students some background knowledge on reindeer. Grab this FREE graphic organizer template to get started as a class with brainstorming ideas about reindeer before they begin writing!
Reindeer Math Craft
Now that your students have learned all about reindeers and written about them, it’s time to link them into math time too! Reindeer lesson plans wouldn’t be complete without some hands-on fun! Using reindeer to discuss different geometry shapes in kindergarten and first grade is perfect for an engaging December lesson. If you have been around long, you know how much I love to incorporate a craft into any subject, especially math! Read more about WHY you should be using crafts in the primary classroom.
This Reindeer Shape Craft is a fun way for students to put their geometry knowledge to practice. You can let them pick their head shape or assign them different ones for differentiation. Then have students assemble their craft with the face pieces and record the shape’s properties on their corresponding “Reindeer Shape Recording Sheet.” Voila! A cute little reindeer craft for a holiday bulletin board!
*TEACHER TIP: Decide ahead of time if you want students to cut everything out or send it home for a parent volunteer to do! Check out my Helping Hands Volunteer System that I used when I was in the classroom. It was a total time saver!
